- Biography/History:
- Rabbinical emissary of the Ashkenazic community in Jerusalem to Europe (name usage from testimony of Sasportas; derivative of medieval Lämmlein, derived from Asher); appeared in 1665-6 in Venice to raise funds, and while there attempted to convince Solomon Hai Saraval, rabbi of Venice, of the miracles performed by the false messiah Shabbethai Tzevi (1626-1676; cited in the investigation by Jacob Sasportas (Ḳitsur tsitsat novel tsevi, ed. Odessa, p. 15; Yaari, Sheluḥe Erets Yiśraʼel, p. 289)); he was among those who spread Sabbathaian documentation from Palestine to cities in Europe; died circa 1690-1700.
- Summary:
- This is a manuscript letter sent to an unnamed dignitary in the community of Holleschau (today Holešov, Czech Republic) in defense against an accusation of a forged letter; Laemmle, who was a shadar (rabbinical emissary) of the Ashkenazic community in Jerusalem for areas in central Europe and a Sabbathaian (follower of Shabbethai Tzevi), stated that his previous letter to Holleschau contained the Latin (i.e. secular) and Hebrew dates next to his signature and was authentically his handwriting (אצל חתימת ידי הן חתימת שמי בכתב יהודית הן כ"י בכתב לעטיין סמוך ונראה) and the purpose of this letter was to reinstate the previous documentation as authentic (and not forged, as Hass apparently charged). Laemmle accuses Leib Hass of Holleschau of spreading rumors; his language to the community uses flattery, likely in an attempt to win back favor. Item verso inscribed with births, deaths, and marriages by Josef Wiener, dignitary (rosh ha-ḳahal) of the Orthodox community in Steinamanger (today Szombathely, Hungary); Wiener's passing is noted by his son in 1847 (earliest date 1832); monogram on recto.
