Summary:
In 'Houtstromen' Paul Borghaerts unravels the origin of wood, which was used in the Northern Netherlands during the period from 1600 to 1950 to build farms. The author discovered that the origin of the wood kept shifting over the years, so that nine important provenance areas and periods can be identified. The new insights explain, among other things, the changes in agriculture and the major influence on economic growth throughout the Netherlands. For his unique research, the author has combined three main areas of research. He examined thousands of old records in archives, mainly from the 16th century. In addition, he measured almost 200 farms and finally 100 dendrochronological measurements were made from the wooden constructions of the farms. The latter made it possible to accurately date each beam examined to the year. In this way he has made the development of the greidschuur or greid farm visible in detail. This new knowledge is important for research into old buildings in the Netherlands and, for example, into ships of the VOC.
