Summary:
The story is set in the South African Republic during the time of the Anglo-Boer War. Johan de Villiers inherits his parents' farm Waterval following his father's death but, because he is not of age, he is sent to relatives in the Cape Province where he stays for twelve years. A childhood friend, Sarie Marais, is shocked when she meets him again; she was under the impression that he had died, a story that her Uncle Hendrik spread. She has meanwhile married, but her husband dies in a skirmish with the "enemy" during which she herself is wounded and loses her sight. Her and Johan's love reawakens and he begins to talk of marriage, but Uncle Hendrik is strongly opposed to Johann. He thinks that Johann is a coward because he doesn't believe in war. Uncle Hendrik is severely wounded in a shooting accident when he and Johann fight over a gun. Johann leaves to take Uncle Hendrik's place in a commando and dies in a shootout between Boers and English soldiers.--Translated from the container blurb.
