Local Notes:
Schimmel Collection copy extra-illustrated with 43 sepia-toned photographs (each mounted on a blank leaf). "This photographically illustrated copy of Deephaven seems to be the possibly unique product of the 1883-86 collaboration between author Sarah Orne Jewett, photographer Emma Lewis Coleman, and historian C. Alice Baker, whose work on the lives of captives following the French and Indian War was completed by Coleman. The group staged the photographs in the style of Millet and possibly posed for them as well. It has been suggested that these photographs were intended for an 1893 edition of the book by the Riverside Press, which in the end was published in a limited edition in 1894 with illustrations by Charles and Marcia Woodbury. See Blanchard, Paula. Sarah Orne Jewett, 1994, p. 225."--Doyle New York (Firm), Rare books, autographs & photographs : sale 13BP04 (New York: William Doyle Galleries, 2013), lot 236.
