Local Notes:
"Charles Cookson, a chemist & druggist at 62, Regent Road, Salford, Manchester, had been in business from at least the 1840s and had clearly either run into difficulties or retired by the 1850's, resulting in this auction of his stock-in-trade by Manchester auctioneers, Leigh and Johnson, which was held on the 18th & 19th October. Such auctions were unusual and this handbill advertisement for the auction is of interest in that it lists with detail the contents of the shop even down to the length of cabinets and number of shelves. Contents include family drugs; patent medicines; pickles & sauces; nail, tooth, and hair brushes; meerschaum pipes, cigar cases, and cigars; vinegar; turpentine; oils; colors; brushes, and more. The fixtures included 'an excellent painted panelled counter, with mahogany top, and brass rail in front, 18 feet 4 inches by 2 feet 1 inch, ten drawers;' show case; painted shelving and drawers; gas meter and fittings; counter scales, and more. Thus serving as a very good inventory of a Victorian chemist's shop."--Vendor's description.
