- Summary:
- This volume is bound in a marbled paper wrapper, contains 43 culinary and household recipes, and was written and compiled by Mary Smith in England starting on March 22, 1845. Examples of recipes in this volume include, a pillaw [pilaf] (p. 1), gingerbread loaf (p. 6), apples à la frangipane (p. 8), Wellington fancy (p. 11), cola pudding (p. 13), milk punch (p. 16), pomade (p. 18), rosemary wash (p. 18), strawberry acid (p. 23), and pickled pork (p. 28). Several recipes are attributed to individuals, including Mrs. E. Loving’s hams (p. 13), Mrs. Best’s lentil soup (p. 19), Miss Clarke’s arrowroot pudding (p. 20), Mrs. Warmeald’s buns (p. 30), Mrs. Hayward’s pudding (p. 30), and Mrs. Cuthbert’s American pudding with jelly (p. 31). In the recipe for lentil soup (p. 19), there is a recommendation for lentils from Frederick Vallee’s Italian Warehouse in Haymarket.
