Summary:
Having himself been a member for 53 years, Longford embarked on a history of the unelected government body since the Norman Conquest to provide a context for what he saw as threats to its existence; it was published in 1988 by William Collins Sons and Company. Seeing the threat renewed a decade later, he added a new preface and offered it again, too late perhaps, for authority was stripped from the House of Lords mere weeks before the book hit the shelves. His wife, noted historical biographer Elizabeth Longford, contributes a prelude. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.
