Summary:
This is a manuscript of the blessings preceding and the prayers following the Priestly Blessing, which are recited silently by the Cohanim as part of the Musaf on the High Holidays and Pilgrim Festivals; the manuscript served the Cohanim's recital when they ascended to the chazzan's lectern (where the Priestly Blessing is traditionally recited, so to face the congregation) and recited the blessings. The Priestly Blessing itself was traditionally recited by the chazzan and Cohanim responsively (conforming to the custom of the Temple of Jerusalem), so there was no need for supplying a text of the Blessing for the Cohanim to follow, but the silent blessings and prayers which would be read silently required them using this manuscript. The Priestly Blessing is followed by a silent prayer for prosperity (Ribon ha-ʻolamim) and peace (Adir ba-marom) which is to follow the final word of the Priestly blessing (Shalom).
Notes:
Ms. leaf.
Title supplied by cataloger; alternate title Birkat kohanim from caption.
