Summary:
African-American artist Joshua Johnson (ca. 1763-1824) is often described as the first Black portrait artist in America. Johnson's work, influences, and artistic milieu are examined in this first monographic treatment of his accomplishments since 1988, which features three essays and entries on all the works included in the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts' exhibition.
