Summary:
This is a manuscript of a talisman written around the Tetragrammaton; אדני written inside the Tetragrammaton letters using the spared-ground technique (called כתב חציבה in Hebrew). Divine names written in cipher above and to the sides of the Tetragrammaton in the center. Psalm 67 and the medieval piyut Ana be-koaḥ gedulat yeminkha are written in a double-menorah motif (both are common texts used in Hebrew talismans), with cryptograms above each menorah's branches; Mordekhai ben Mosheh, the talisman artist, inscribes his name by the base of the right menorah. The 42-letter Divine name is written in three-letter divisions, each divided within drawn circles in a sideways-ladder scheme supporting the bottom. Upper edge cut round to shape an arch, representing a tablet (common with Ashkenazic talismans). Written in a square Ashkenazic script typical of the 19th century.
Notes:
Former owner signature on verso, mostly effaced, written in a semicursive Sephardic script typical of the early 20th century; item may have traveled to Jerusalem, which then had a mixture of Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jews.
