- Summary:
- During the seventeenth century, the theatre was predominately a male domain from which women were excluded, especially as playwrights. For Aphra Behn, the first woman playwright, to enter the fiercely competitive arena of the professional theatre was, therefore, a significant achievement. This video shows a complete performance of her stage triumph, The Rover, first performed in 1677. This contemporary production was achieved in collaboration with the Women's Playhouse Trust. Includes interviews with Jules Wright, WPT director, and a discussion of the translation from stage to screen.
