Edition:
Seventh Edition.
Summary:
This text for students in honors and upper-mainstream general chemistry courses presents material from a unified, molecular point of view, emphasizing the central role of structure. This edition now offers greater focus on the electronic structure of molecules as a unifying theme. Students should have a solid high school background in algebra and coordinate geometry. Each chapter includes boxes on connections to other branches of science, engineering, and medicine, and boxed discussions of the physical origins of chemical behavior, along with problems, lab activities, and cumulative exercises. The text also contains 55 pages of reference appendices, including a math review and solutions to odd-numbered problems. The updated illustrations feature color photos, images, and drawings, including new molecular art based on actual quantum chemistry calculations. For this seventh edition, the writing style is revised to be more conversational, and the text is reorganized for modularity and flexibility. A companion website contains problems with optional hints and feedback, plus a molecular visualization program and short video lectures. Oxtoby is affiliated with Pomona College.
