- Summary:
- This is a comprehensive book of cytology and is written in simple language with multiple tables, schematic diagrams and colored illustrations. The essential "take home" messages have been highlighted in multiple small boxes. This book is both a theoretical and practical resource for the post graduate students in pathology, laboratory technical staffs and the practicing cytopathologists. The book is divided in four parts: general cytology, clinical exfoliative cytology, laboratory techniques and fine needle aspiration cytology. In the first section, the author has described the updated current information on cell morphology, basic functions of cell, tissue and cell organization, cell division and its control, cellular response to injury, different types of cell death, basic principles of cytogenetics, and detailed account of neoplasm. In the second section the various aspects of clinical exfoliative cytology have been described. The chapters on cervical cytology provide complete information on normal cytology, cervical carcinogenesis, and the diagnostic criteria for various pre-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions of cervix, and cervical screening program. Various chapters on effusion cytology, urine cytology, respiratory cytology, gastrointestinal tract cytology and cerebrospinal fluid cytology provide detailed knowledge on normal cytology, clinical symptoms, diagnostic cytological criteria and ancillary techniques of different diseases. In the third section, the author has given a detailed description of the basic techniques of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), routine laboratory techniques, immunocytochemistry, principles of light microscopy, basic principles and applications of digital microscopy and flow cytometry, liquid based cytology, polymerase chain reaction, quality control, laboratory organization and safety. In the last section, fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of various organs is described in detail. Immunocytochemistry and molecular diagnostic features are also provided whenever needed. Various lesions in head and neck, orbit, thyroid, breast, lymph node, abdominal organs including liver, spleen, pancreas, kidney, adrenal along with pelvic organs, skin, bone and soft tissue are discussed with large number of microphotographs, boxes and tables. Overall, this is a comprehensive concise textbook of cytology.
