Biography/History:
Talmudic scholar and learned layman living in Poběžovice (Ranschburg/Ronspurg); studied with R. Meir Bunzlauer ("Fischeles") of Prague (1703-1769), senior heard of the Prague Beth Din; father of Bezaleel Daniel Rosenbaum, widely known as R. Bezalel Ranschburg (1760-1820), prominent Talmudist; possibly also studied under R. Johnathan Eybeschütz in Prague.
Summary:
This is a page of inscriptions originally on a front endpaper of a book, likely a printed volume; the former owners sign their names, places of origin, and their current places of residence (as was common during the 18th century in Central and Western Europe). The first owner was "העררן אויף ר"ב אין בעהמען אברהם לעערר מזולטצוייס" (rendered into German “herrn auf R[anschburg] in Böhmen Abraham Löhrer [of] Zulzweiss”); the town in reference is Weißensulz in Bohemia, today Bělá nad Radbuzou near Plzeň in the Czech Republic. The second inscriber indicates that he is the subsequent owner ("ואני באתי בתוכו") and signs "Yoʼel R"b ... fon Noṿen Ṿeisen" (possibly a reference to Nová Dlouhá Ves, which was then called Neuenlangendorff in German) with his German autograph on the top line: "Joel Rosenbaum aus Ronspurg". Poběžovice, Czech Republic was formerly known as Ronspurg in German and Ranschburg in Western Yiddish and had a sizable Jewish community during the 18th century.
