Summary:
This is a hand-decorated and handwritten invitation to honor a recipient with the opening of the ark and the removal of the Torah scroll (called petiḥah); he is then to walk with it at the front of the procession with the cantor, rabbis, and others (sometimes with other Torah scrolls as well) and finally place it on the raised platform (bimah) for the Sabbath Torah reading. The invitation was designed for use during the celebration of the Sabbath of the Bar mitzvah of Yosef Gold, son of Yitsḥaḳ Mosheh, on the occasion that he was to read the portion from the Torah; the American Ashkenazic custom at the time was that relatives and friends of the celebrating family would be accorded honors during the synagogue services. Written in seven lines, partially blind ruled; written in an Ashkenazic square script; first and second line written in gold ink. Borders with hand-drawn colored floral patterns and embroidery patterns; centered word surrounded by loops and color formations. Written in the United States or Canada, between 1900 and 1930.
