Singer-Mendenhall copy purchased for the Penn Libraries in 2021 from Samuel Gedge Ltd.
Singer-Mendenhall copy has on front pastedown armorial bookplate ("Bibliothèque de Mr. le Cte. de la Leyen.") of the library of comte François-Charles de la Leyen (1736-1775), continued by his widow Marie-Anne-Josèphe de Dalberg (-1804), confiscated and partially dispersed in 1793. See C. Hiegel, "Nicolas-Antoine Baur, commissaire-bibliographe du district de Sarreguemines (1794-1795)," Annuaire de la Société d'histoire et d'archéologie de la Lorraine (2009), pages 64, 70.
Singer-Mendenhall copy has on title leaf red armorial stamp ("FÜRSTLICH VON DER LEYEN BIBLIOTHEC"), probably of the library of prince Philippe-François de la Leyen (1766-1829; son of comte François-Charles de la Leyen), who was raised to that rank in 1806.
Singer-Mendenhall copy bound in contemporary half leather over marbled boards; gold-tooled spine panels; gold-stamped brown leather title leaf; volume numbers stamped in gold on spine; yellow silk marker; all edges red.
