Summary:
This is a manuscript of notes for a Shabbat shubah sermon, written in shorthand likely before the sermon. The manuscript begins with the words "Śoś aśiś" (Isaiah 61:10), the opening of the Haftarah for Parashat Nitsavim (immediately preceding the High Holidays) and runs on themes of repentance and renewal of spirit; there are other scriptural references and two parables at the end of the manuscript. Written in 19 long lines; written in an eastern European cursive script, entirely in pencil, with a line separating each idea. Folded stationery of the Wilkes Street Synagogue, Ḥevra Benai Horodna, 93 Wilkes Street, Spitalfields, East [End, London] meeting notes (Yiddish printed form, dated 1899); printed stationery indicates that membership meetings were to occur on Sunday nights (likely monthly). Possibly written by Alexander Tertis, Reverend and preacher in London's East End, mohel (ritual circumcisor) and author of "Dam berit".
