- Summary:
- These are fragments of a manuscript of Musar literature; it emanated from the Musar movement, an educational and cultural movement which developed among the Yeshivas in 19th century Lithuania stressing moral conduct and discipline. The composition follows the style of specific medieval ethical works (such as Orḥot tsadiḳim and Igeret ha-teshuvah) with the intention of educating students to the ways of Musar; paragraphs, ideas, and extracts from earlier sources are placed into individual structured sections. Shaʻar ha-kaʻas deals with ridding oneself of anger and stubbornness, and extant are parts 3-6; Shaʻar ha-perishut deals with ridding oneself of licentious thoughts and attaining impurity (even mentioning Lilith; f. 3r), though unnumbered, mostly extant; and Shaʻar ha-ʻanaṿah deals with attaining humility and deference, and the entire chapter is extant. Written in a Lithuanian cursive script typical of the later 19th century. Various edges repaired, with some repairs joining bottom or side edges of leaves (such as f. 7r-v); leaves stained and darkened from use.
