Summary:
When you look at a painting, you probably wonder how it was made. It is a question Monica de Ruiter often gets when she gives tours of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. In general, however, you will find remarkably few answers to this question in conventional art books. That is why 'Look like an artist' is not just a book about art; it shows what challenges artists face when creating a work, what steps they have to take and what decisions they have to make. Through research and conversations with painters and restorers, De Ruiter lets old and new masters have their say about how they work and why exactly in that way. The meaning of a work, it turns out, is closely related to the technique. De Ruiter, for example, shows how the use of paint has changed over the centuries. Fine painting was in vogue in the Middle Ages, Rembrandt already spreads his paint thicker and Van Gogh's paint blobs, and with them the immediate emotion, are on the canvas. Speaking of Van Gogh: the invention of the tube enabled him to paint outdoors in nature. His predecessors had to make their paint on site from pigment powder, which would naturally blow away with every breath of wind. So they stayed in their studio. In short: without a tube there would be no Van Gogh. Our old and new paintings (and their makers) are full of such surprising stories that tell us about art history in a different and special way.
