Summary:
This case highlights the experience of Dami, a cybercafé business center entrepreneur in Nigeria. Several small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria are increasingly using the Internet in their business operations. However, the dangers of insecurity around the application of the Internet could be disastrous to the unwary business enterprise, as this case illustrates. Cyberattacks can hinder a firm's productivity, harm its reputation, and cause it to lose its competitive edge. Consequently, the importance of protecting firms against cyberattacks and what measures businesses can take to protect themselves are emphasized in this case study. Also, the challenges associated with a start-up in the Internet café industry drive a budding entrepreneur to search for solutions to rescue his flagging enterprise. The case underlines the entrepreneur's dilemma in finding ways to fund and develop identified business projects, which include forming a partnership or selling the existing business to start a new venture. Students are asked to evaluate various aspects of Dami's business decisions, recommend measures to ameliorate the effects of Internet insecurity on SMEs, and offer suggestions on the actions Dami should take moving forward.
