- Summary:
- The Association of Southeast Asian Nations is currently at a turning point with greater regional integration with the launch of ASEAN Economic Community in 2015. As a major recipient of foreign direct investment globally, the Southeast Asian region plays host to one of the largest offshore location for global manufacturing and supply chain network. Despite its strategic trade route location connecting the east and the west, Southeast Asia is also one of the world's most disaster-prone region, with increasing numbers of natural disasters affecting economic development and international businesses operating within this region. Natural disasters are a major cause of global supply chain disruption. This article assesses the impact of natural disasters on international businesses in Southeast Asia, traces the development of regional disaster management and highlights the urgency of greater regional cooperation on building disaster resiliency.
