At the end of the eighteenth century, the French revolutionaries invaded the Southern Netherlands. The age-old world of the ancien regime was rapidly dismantled to make way for modern times. Antwerp was also occupied and was influenced by the French Revolution. The Antwerp aristocrat Pierre Goetsbloets was a fervent opponent of the Revolution. He belonged to the financial top layer of the city and was very critical of the French regime. After all, for noblemen like him, the French rule was a disaster. Goetsbloets decided to record the events for posterity in the form of an extensive chronicle, which he decorated with beautiful watercolors. Goetsbloets' watercolors are the most haunting images that have survived from the French period and most of them have never been published before. They show both iconic moments from the revolutionary years and everyday events in a city that suddenly turned blue-red. Goetsbloets observed his fellow citizens with great humor and an eye for detail. This book brings together a wide selection of watercolors for the first time, accompanied by accessible commentary. Revolution in Antwerp paints a unique picture of the city during one of its most turbulent periods.

Aan het einde van de achttiende eeuw vielen de Franse revolutionairen de Zuidelijke Nederlanden binnen. De eeuwenoude wereld van het ancien régime werd in sneltempo ontmanteld, om plaats te maken voor de moderne tijd. Ook Antwerpen werd bezet en onderging de invloed van de Franse Revolutie. De Antwerpse aristocraat Pierre Goetsbloets was een rabiaat tegenstander van de Revolutie. Hij behoorde tot de financiële toplaag van de stad en stond erg kritisch tegenover het Franse bewind. Voor edellieden zoals hij betekende de Franse overheersing immers een ramp. Goetsbloets besloot om de gebeurtenissen vast te leggen voor het nageslacht, in de vorm van een omvangrijke kroniek, die hij met prachtige aquarellen versierde. Goetsbloets' aquarellen zijn de meest beklijvende beelden die bewaard bleven uit de Franse tijd en de meeste zijn nooit eerder gepubliceerd. Ze tonen zowel iconische momenten uit de revolutiejaren als alledaagse gebeurtenissen in een stad die plots blauwrood kleurde. Goetsbloets observeerde zijn stadsgenoten met veel humor en met oog voor detail. Dit boek bundelt voor het eerst een ruime selectie aquarellen, voorzien van toegankelijke commentaar.
