- Summary:
- This ALL SWISS case study documents the efforts of a young Swiss entrepreneur, Mr Rolf Gubler, who dreamed of opening a store in Beijing that exclusively sold Swiss goods - in order to take advantage of Switzerland's positive image with Chinese consumers. The case follows Rolf's venture in China from the inception of the idea, through various business plans, to the establishment of the ALL SWISS shop, and ultimately to the eventual sale of the business to a Chinese partner.Part A describes an important decision Rolf has to make: whether to accept an attractive job offer in Singapore or take the risk of starting his own business in China. Inspired by the popularity of a retail store in Nanjing, which specialized in selling western products, and noticing the absence of Swiss brands in the Chinese market, Rolf came up with the idea of setting up a shop in Beijing selling made-in-Switzerland-only products. To prove the viability of his business plan, Rolf performed the proper due diligence and conducted detailed and extensive market research - learning about regulations, competition, cultural differences, location, marketing, proof of concept, human resourcing, as well as financing. Yet the subtleties of various market conditions and uncertain answers to many operational questions did not make the decision easy.
