Summary:

This case studies negotiation in Shakespeare's Love's Labor's Lost. In this comedy, the Princess of France and her three ladies travel to Navarre to meet with the King and his three lords about a business matter. When seeing or reading this play, Shakespearean audiences will often predict that four marriages between the two groups will occur by the end of the play. Yet, there are no marriages, only hints of future romance. Shakespeare's careful juxtaposition of these characters uses a "romance plot" to highlight the differing leadership and negotiation skills of the King and the Princess. The Princess, as an ambassador who represents her country's interests, outmaneuvers the King in a negotiation about land holdings and loan payments by showing superior situational awareness. This case asks students to evaluate the use of situational awareness in the praxis of leadership and negotiation.
