Summary:
In 2016, athlete activism was thrust into the national spotlight when former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick protested racial inequities by refusing to stand for the playing of the national anthem. Following his season of protest, Kaepernick was never signed to another NFL contract, which many saw as a warning to athletes of what can happen when engaging in protest. Since Kaepernick's initial protest, however, a number of events, including the death of many Black Americans during encounters with members of law enforcement, have brought the notion of racial inequities into the collective conscious of the United States. In response, there has been an increase in athletes engaging in social and political protests, with some having refused to play in games--resulting in the cancellation of those sport contests. This case study requires students to take on a fictional consulting role to advise leaders in the sport industry how to address and manage the growing number of athletes who are engaged in protests and/or activism.
