Summary:
As Canadian consumers eagerly awaited enhanced network speeds over the past few years, the big three telecom players--Rogers, Bell, and Telus--paved the way to deliver 5G technology. With big outlays made by these companies towards the launch of 5G, their financial status led to concerns about the sustainability of these investments. In the course of launching 5G networks, the Canadian telecom companies, along with companies around the world also in the 5G development race, faced challenges when these developments were halted due to a dispute between China and the United States. This case study walks students through an evaluation of the financial performance of Rogers, Bell, and Telus between 2016 and 2019, the main years for 5G development. The aim of this study is to test and analyze the financial distress of the big three telecom companies using distress models, and to seek understanding of the issues the countries working on 5G networks faced because of the dispute.
