Summary:
This is a manuscript leaf torn from a codex, likely a synagogue pinḳas, stating regulations for the gabbai (synagogue treasurer) to collect fines for lateness to the Sabbath learning sessions. Translation of the Yiddish text: "It is expressed by the committee that all are obligated for every Sabbath to come to the studying at the time which the beadle appoints, and anyone who does not arrive at the time which the gabbai has allowed to be enforced must pay a fine of one grosz, and one who arrives during the middle of study must give (an additional) half grosz; one who leaves without permission of the gabba'im pays a fine of two grosz." The language of "the committee" ("מהחברה") suggests that this community was too small to have a parnas (a community dignitary) and perhaps not even a rabbi; the language of the function of the beadle further suggests that he was to gather the congregants from their houses to the synagogue ("דער צייט אז דער שמש ווערט אן זאגין") while the gabba'im were to supervise the study; this arrangement was typical of small towns and villages in Eastern Europe.
