Summary:
"The cinematic oeuvre of American film director, producer and screenwriter King Vidor (1894-1982) encompasses more than fifty films. They range from silent classics and films on sociopolitical topics, such as The big parade (1925) and The crowd (1928), to others depicting social upheaval, for instance Our daily bread (1934), westerns, including Duel in the sun (1947), and the screen adaptation of the novel War and peace (1956). Vidor developed his art across a number of genres, was thoroughly interested in technical innovations, and he dedicted himself to working with many of the most important actors and actresses of his time. This publication presents observations on individual films as well as in-depth essays on central creative periods, themes and genres in King Vidor's work: his silent films, his interest in social and political questions, his westerns and his melodramas."--Page 4 of cover
