Summary:
Beckmann, returning back home after being held as a POW in the Soviet Union, finds out that while he was cooling his heels in a prison camp in Siberia, his wife took up with another man and his son is dead. He desperately seeks a way out of this life, for, as he puts it "he can't go on anymore". But then he meets Anna Gehrke on the banks of the Elbe, a young widow, who also "can't go on anymore".
