Summary:
For almost 8 thousand years in China and more than 3 thousand years in Mexico, jade has been considered a precocious stone representative of the cosmology and power in both cultures and a key material in the understanding of ancient cultures in China and Mesoamerica. The green stone known as "chalchihuitl" in Nahuatl, "ya'ax chich hun" in Maya, and "yu" in Chinese means "precious stone" and was a treasured symbol of prestige and wealth for its owners as well as a guide in the afterlife. The exhibition "Stones of the sky, jade civilizations" commemorates the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mexico and the Popular Republic of China, presenting 220 antique jade pieces from both countries that represent the similarities and differences in the use of jade and other green stones in these two great civilizations. The exhibitions curated by Dr. Diana Magaloni Kerpel, Director of the MNA; Dr. Walburga Wiesheu, from the ENAH and Dr. Xu Lin, researcher of the Palace Museum in Beijing was organized in five thematic areas: 1) The features of jade and techniques for their work, 2) The rituals of jade, 3) Work and aesthetics, 4) The symbols of power and 5) The transit to the "other world"
