Summary:
Pre-Columbian Diaguita art with emphasis on the ceramic tradition that was unique among indigenous societies occupying the territory of what is now Chile. The ancient Diaguita were herders and farmers who lived in the fertile ravines of the Norte Chico region. They were allies of the Incas, accompanying them in the expansion of their empire northward to Copiapó and southward to Central Chile. Descendants of the even more ancient El Molle and Las Ánimas cultures, the Diaguita expressed their identities in a special way through a ceramic tradition that was unique among ancient indigenous societies occupying the territory of what is now Chile. Their ceramic pieces are characterized by complex abstract designs that follow intricate geometric patterns that seem to be shamanic in originches Those same designs have remained present to this day in the imaginary of Diaguita territory, where it can be found on murals, sidewalks and other surfaces, as well as in excellent reproductions crafted by local artisans.
