Summary:
The work of Beatriz Leyton is the fruit of her artistic career and her participation in a tradition from which she feeds and to which she, in turn, contributes. Formed at both the University of Chile and the Catholic University of Chile, Leyton participates in this already long line of work dedicated to the cultivation of engraving, which has found so much fortune in Chile. It appears in her work, therefore, some of the rigor of that discipline and even of that dose of craftsmanship that is her own. Her trajectory, linked to instances such as Taller de Artes Visuales TAV, led by Francisco Brugnoli, or the Taller 99, founded by Nemesio Antúnez, link Leyton to instances that have been fundamental to the history of contemporary art in Chile. The issue of support has been present in art perhaps forever, but it is in present times that it has acquired a leading role. It is no longer a basis on which a particular artistic expression is embodied and made visible, to become an integral element of this phenomenon. This is particularly evident in the works that Leyton presents in this exhibition, in which the handcrafted wool fabric is combined with digital printing.
