Summary:
In November 2010 the pirekua - traditional p'urhépecha song - was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. This declaration, although it was received with enthusiasm by the government of Michoacán and different governmental institutions, also had the consequence of generating a conflict with the Pireris, composers and musicians of the P'urhépecha people. The book describes and analyzes the processes of the patrimonialization of the Pirekua from a critical perspective and invites us to reflect on the effects of the implementation of this new international Convention.
