Summary:
The history of the Bonino galleries tells a possible history of the transnational networks of modern and contemporary art. Those who visited its halls in the Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro or New York venues could find Charlotte Moorman playing TV Cello de Nam June Paik, Alberto Greco doing a performance with Antonio Gades, Jorge Romero Brest with Andy Warhol, Marcello Mastroianni touring a sample or Candido Portinari talking with Mário Pedrosa or Lygia Clark. The galleries were not, however, an individual project of the Italian dealer Alfredo Bonino (1925-1981). Its headquarters operated with varying degrees of independence under the leadership of Enzo Menichini and Guillermo Whitelow in Buenos Aires, Giovanna Bonino in Rio de Janeiro and Fernanda Bonino in New York. This transnational character explains the dispersion of the material traces of the galleries. For this reason, Espigas Bonino shows arose with the purpose of reconnecting these scattered documents, based on the documentary heritage preserved and put to consultation in our institution.
