Summary:
El Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes exhibits to the public, before its final replacement in the stairs of the government Casa Rosada, the monumental historic tapestry titled "El General San Martín cruzando los Andes", which has been restored by the Manufacture des Gobelins thanks to the French Government and sponsoring companies. The work -which was a gift in 1917 from the Government of France to the Republic of Argentina - is exhibited alongside pieces of other heritage patrimony, which brings together ancient tapespers, from the 17th to the 19th centuries with others from modern masters such as Joan Miró, Fernand Léger, Sonia Delaunay, Alicia Penalba, Roberto Matta, Antonio Seguí and Bertrand Lavier. The tapestry of General Martin was made between September 4, 1911 and June 26, 1914. Eight tapestry masters worked on it. The names of four of them (Durand, Boiton, Delille, Ma'tre) are inscribed in the lower right corner of the piece. A little further down, blank and on a slightly larger scale, appears the signature of the creator of the composition, the painter Alfred [Philippe] Roll (Paris 1846-1919)
