- Summary:
- This is a manuscript letter from the Israelitische Cultusverwaltung zu Kudrynce (then in eastern Galicia, today Kudryntsi in southern Ukraine, approximately 50 miles north of the border of the Ukranian-Romanian border), addressed to David Sassoon (Sir Albert Abdullah David Sassoon, 1818-1896) in Bombay (Mumbai, India), requesting a donation to help the impoverished and the widows and orphans following an outbreak of cholera (during the fifth cholera pandemic (1881-1896), Russia and Eastern Europe lost 200,000 between 1893-4). The community leaders in Kudryntsi had sent another letter earlier (which seems to have gone unanswered) and added this letter in a more frantic tone. Letter verso adds a paragraph seeking another donation from Sassoon for a synagogue. Letter in 15 long lines (three lines of introduction), with signatures of the rabbi and president below; letter postscript in seven lines (verso). Written in a Sephardic semicursive script; דוד ששון in a square script (initials built in with pen crosshatching).
