Summary:
Montaigne's emprunts of humanistic scholarship are central to the poetics of his Essais. Citation becomes the formal means of a skeptical writing that wants to keep things in suspense. Bayle takes up this technique in his "Armoury of the Enlightenment" in order to redesign it with the means of bibliographical meticulousness.
