Originally published in 1971, the book was conceived as a critical response to the Contemporary Black Artists in America exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art but grew into a "concrete affirmation of Black Art philosophy as interpreted by eight Black artists," as Lloyd notes in the publication's introduction"--https://primaryinformation.org/product/black-art-notes.

Notes:
"Black Art Notes was originally edited and published in 1971 by Tom Lloyd in an unknown edition size. Through researching the original, we discovered two different editions. This copy is a facsimile of what we believe to be the second edition since it contains more interior cover quotes and a colophon. We also discovered that the front cover changed in color from edition to edition and sometimes within an edition. We are unsure of how many variations there were for the cover. The essays were unchanged from edition to edition"--Page [38].
