Summary:

In the 1960s, a large part of the Nubian population living along the Nile River was moved out to make way for a new lake behind the Aswan High Dam, then under construction. To preserve as much as possible about Nubian culture and society, the American University in Cairo conducted a survey of the Nubian people between 1960 and 1964. This volume for the first time gathers together the research articles that were generated by that survey. Including many photographs taken at that document ways of life that have long since disappeared, these articles are a valuable resource for researchers looking for information on the pre-Aswan Dam society of the Nubian people.
