Summary:
In the early seventeenth century, Jan Janszoon from Haarlem converted to Islam during his North African exile. He easily rose to become admiral of the barbarian pirate city of Salé in Morocco. In doing so, he demonstrated the human ability to identify with a new culture, so that he passionately defended it and proved to be a dominant force. Perhaps identity is determined more by circumstances and coincidence than by birth and nationality. "Reizigers van een nieuwe tijd" [transl. Travelers of a New Age] is an ode to frontiersmen such as Jan Janszoon, who became part of Moroccan culture and who show us new forms of citizenship. What do these historical travelers tell us about the time we live in?--Provided by publisher, translated from Dutch.
