Summary:
This book is about Fernando García (Uruguay 1887-1945), merchant, industrialist, banker and collector, and above all the history of his cultural legacy to the State. The author emphasizes his art collection, which included the largest set of works by Juan Manuel Blanes (152 pieces) assembled in Uruguay. The son of a Galician immigrant, García was a "new rich" -from the sale of alcohol and cigarettes- who transcend as a philanthropist and benefactor. His heritage was a way to "spiritualize" his wealth. However, by not complying with his testamentary wishes, the State de-historicized the patrimony received, a process that this book seeks to reverse by rebuilding the art circuit and the social and intellectual networks that facilitated and profiled that cultural consumption in Uruguay during the first half of the 20th century. The author's hypothesis is that the collector's legacy materialized some of the ideas that bid in the cultural field of Centennial Uruguay concerning the essence of the nation, the value of tradition and the ways of access to modernity.
