本书在国际移民及跨国主义理论的基础上, 运用跨国多点民族志的方法, 分别从江门, 福州及海南抽取坎镇, 官镇及文镇的移民群体作为研究对象, 讨论在变动中的世界体系之下, 这些国际移民是如何重构社会身份与协商所属社会阶层, 并以其丰富多元的跨国实践来抵抗现有世界体系给个体所带来的原子化与边缘感.本书试图跳单一民族国家的框架来分析迁移主体的多重位置与身份形塑.跨国实践使个体可以充分利用不同民族国家在世界体系中的落差, 实现社会地位表达的最大化.而跨国实践作为迁移个体应对世界体系的微观实践, 通过跨国空间下的消费价值剩余转移的方式, 有可能在一定程度上也减缓了跨国流动给祖籍国与移居国带来的资源不平等分配的冲击.
