- 本書文章所涵蓋的範圍大概是晚清最後十年到一九三○年代左右, 前後將近三十年的時間, 偏重的是「變」的部份, 而尚未來得及仔細分析在新史學甚囂塵上之時, 舊史本身的風貌. 在將近三十年中, 史學的意義、題目、史料、方法、概念、詞彙、評價、敘事架構等都起了重大的變化, 以至於要想回過頭去用傳統方式寫史, 幾乎不可能. 譬如在近代以前, 人們多用「史」而罕用「歷史」, 近代則用「歷史」而少用「史」. 由「史」到「歷史」, 在隱微之間有某種深刻的改變, 這一類改變在近代的史學實踐中可謂不勝枚舉. 近代中國重要的史家、歷史著作、史學流派, 或歷史機構, 幾乎都有人研究了, 以至於許多人感到好像在這個領域已經沒有什麼可以著手之處. 可是, 如果我們把視界放寬到整個時代的歷史意識, 及它們與政治、社會的複雜互動, 則有一個相當廣闊的園地擺在眼前
