"The Vermeer Room was inspired by Vermeer's painting A girl asleep. It's a very beautiful painting of a young girl seated at a table. Her head rests against her hand and her eyes are closed. To her right is an illuminated doorway. An x-ray of the painting revealed that at one point there was a figure of a man in the doorway. This was very mysterious to me, that Vermeer chose to remove the image, to leave an empty space. I thought of the light in the doorway, about things hidden. I thought of the girl's sleep. While the scene is very quiet sleep is often drenched in sound."--Julia Wolfe website, The Vermeer room webpage, program note.
