Summary:
The purpose of the study is to examine the in-college and post-college experiences of black female former athletes. Within this qualitative study, ten division one black female former athletes (six revenue and four non-revenue generating) who graduated between the years 2014-2019 were interviewed over a three-month time period. This study primarily focuses on race and gender in the lives of these black women in college, career trajectories, and post-college success. As a result of further analysis, major findings amongst respondents included: adjusting to college athletics and academic rigor, athletics time commitment, career readiness resources needed in transitioning the workforce, and the significance of race in their professional lives. From these results it was concluded that that athletic departments are significantly lacking in preparing black female athletes for their next phase in life and being conscious of the limitations presented due to a lack of social capital upon university entry. Most of the resources that these athletes received were on an academic basis rather than career readiness support, respondents primarily sought after the latter on their own.
