The designation "op. 16" for the 1st six Albrechtsberger works may be inauthentic; these 6 works have also been published as his op. 21 (see: Six quatuors pour deux violons, alto et violoncelle : oeuvre XXI / composés par George Albrechtsberger -- Vienne : Bureau d'Arts et d'Industrie, [179-?]; pl. no. 174). Another set of 6 similar works for string quintet exists designated op. 16, and yet another set designated op. 21 also exists: for 2 violas and 2 violoncellos, with a different sequence of keys.

All works feature an introductory prelude in addition to the subsequent fugue.
