Smith copy has dated 19th-century manuscript inscription ("Broseley Novr. 22nd 1827") in pencil on front pastedown; largely illegible autograph ("F.A. [...]") in pencil on front pastedown; bookseller's manuscript notes in pencil on front free endpaper and blank leaf preceding title leaf; a few manuscript notes in ink and some manuscript marks in ink or pencil in text; manuscript notes in ink and pencil on verso of back free endpaper; manuscript notes in ink on back pastedown.
Acquired for the Penn Libraries with assistance from the Edgar Fahs Smith Memorial Fund.
Smith copy purchased for the Penn Libraries in 2020 from Alastor Rare Books Ltd.
Smith copy has at head of title leaf dated 19th-century autograph ("Richd Thursfield [added in pencil: Esq.] Broseley Feby 19th 1827") of surgeon Richard Thursfield (1800-1868) of Broseley, Shropshire, England.
Smith copy has autograph ("Mr. J.M. Rogers") on verso of back free endpaper.
Smith copy has "New and easy extemporaneous formula, for making, in a very few minutes, medicinal hydrocyanic or Prussic acid, of extreme purity; always of a known and uniform strength, and free from liability to the usual spontaneous changes" by Richard Laming (8 pages) bound in after last printed leaf. Leaves are closely cropped with minor damage to text along fore-edges.
Smith copy has numerous blank leaves bound in at end of volume, containing [12], 30, [1] pages of manuscript pharmaceutical notes, [11] blank pages, and [5] pages of manuscript notes titled "Prescriptiones Ophthalmici". Portions of the fore-edge margin of the first six leaves have been excised to make alphabetical finding tabs
