- This book traces the transformation of a 'mostly to pilgrims and traders' inviting and open magnificent building into a sealed-off fortification system. This development of the late-antique city wall of Resafa is explained and richly illustrated and finally made comprehensible in an animated film. The book deals with the effect of prosperity and technology transfer as well as the effects of war, blackmail and the plague on the organisation of a major construction site in late roman times in the Eastern Empire. Basic building research on the walls and the rampart system lead to new historic insights, also into the wider region.
