- Summary:
- A masterwork composed in just months... Mahler's monumental "Symphony of a Thousand" is presented by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of chief conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin. They are joined by an incredible group of soloists and four world-class choirs for this live webcast of the Eighth Symphony. Mahler composed his pioneering Symphony No. 8 over the course of an eight-week-long creative frenzy. Fusing song and symphony, the work he produced has an unusual two-part structure: the first part sets the Latin text of the 9th-century Pentecostal hymn Veni creator spiritus, while the second part sets the final scene of Goethe's Faust. Together, text and music convey an incredible expression of faith in the human spirit, to which audiences at the symphony's 1910 premiere responded with roaring applause.
