冉鵬日記自1931年起,至1977年終,共四十七年.現留存1949年至1977年,共二十九冊.本書所選日記,是1949年全年(12 月9日前在大陸),加選1950年前三個月(在台灣),共計十五個月.這段時間正值國民政府內戰失利,步步撤退,自南京而廣州,最後從成都抵達台北.冉鵬身居行政中樞,見證繫於存亡的艱苦歷程.1950年3月因蔣介石復職總統,閻錫山內閣總辭,冉鵬也隨之辭職,離開行政院.1949年1月至1950年3月的經歷,是他全部日記中最重要的部分,也是他服務行政院最後階段的完整紀錄. 中國1949 年的大變局及其闡釋,影響至大.冉氏家族繁衍已逾三代,物換星移,人事全非.特在日記逐月的註釋後,以<冉鵬自撰年譜>,作為附錄,期盼對閱讀者有所疏引.
